THE TAX POSITION

NSW wages are only part of the picture.

For NSW payroll tax, interstate wages and payroll tax grouping can affect registration and the threshold available. Payroll tax is separate from PAYG withholding and routine payroll processing.

BEFORE WE TALK

A useful starting point.

Tell us which entities employ staff, where wages are paid and whether you already report payroll tax. This helps define the work involved.

Contact KPA before sending financial records or sensitive documents.

Records to have in mind

  • Details of employing entities and related businesses
  • Monthly wage and payroll records
  • Where employees work and details of interstate wages
  • Existing payroll tax registrations and returns, if available
  • Relevant revenue-office correspondence and deadlines

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you enquire.

Is payroll tax the same as PAYG withholding?

No. Payroll tax is a state or territory tax on defined wages. PAYG withholding is a separate federal obligation.

What if we employ in more than one state?

Tell us about all employing entities and where wages are paid. Interstate wages can affect the NSW threshold, and the relevant rules differ between jurisdictions.

Can related businesses affect our position?

Yes. Businesses can be grouped for payroll tax purposes. In NSW a group shares a threshold, so the group’s wage information can matter as well as your own.
